Blueberry Greens-Force
Three of the most common questions I get about green foods are "why are they green?", why are they popular?" and "which should I choose?". Let me try to answer these in this short space.
Green food blends are green because they contain plants that are high in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green pigment (or color) that literally stocks the energy from sunlight.Only plants and some microorganisms can actually use the sunlight in this way. Plants convert the light, through a process called photosynthesis, into useable energy. They also stock unused "solar light" as chlorophyll. Some individuals have therefore expressed the idea that green plants are a source of pure solar energy. Though it might sound a little esoteric to some, the statement is factual from a botanical perspective. And, this may, in part at least, explain the energy enhancing effects of chlorphyll on the body. Chlorophyll has indeed been shown to INCREASE ENERGY, NEUTRALIZE SEVERAL HARMFUL CHEMICALS, CLEANSE THE BODY GENTLY, OFFER ANTIOXIDANT EFFECTS and, possibly, SUPPLY THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR HEMOGLOBIN, our oxygen carrying red blood cells. Yes, our grandmothers were right, we should eat our greens!
Two of the other bioactive plant pigments often found in "green food" blends are carotenoids and anthocyanins. Carotenoids give the characteristic orange-yellow colors whereas anthocyanins give the redish-purple and blue color to fruits and vegetables. Both these pigments have been found to exert MAJOR ANTIOXIDANT and ANTIOCANCER ACTIVITY. Carrots and spinach are high in carotenoids wherease grapes and blueberries are high in anthocyanins. Many of these components are VERY POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANTS. Blueberries have scored among the highest on the OXYGEN RADICAL ABSORBANCE CAPACITY (ORAC) scale. Research undertaken by a US government agency suggests that high ORAC FOODS MAY SLOW DOWN THE AGING OF THE BODY AND OF THE BRAIN IN HUMANS.
So, green foods are very important, but not always popular to the taste buds. That's why natural product companies have deveoped green food blends. these supplements generally contain a variety of green foods as well as other superfoods that offer antioxidant activity.
